- What is affiliate marketing
- How it works
- How to do affiliate marketing as a beginner
Firstly, what is affiliate marketing?
Affiliate marketing is a type of marketing where you earn a commission by promoting other people’s products. It’s performance-based marketing where your earnings are determined by the effectiveness of your marketing efforts.
According to Wikipedia, affiliate marketing is categorized into four core players: the merchant, the network, the publisher or affiliate, and the customer.
The merchant: It refers to the product owner or creator. This is sometimes called the retailer or brand. A merchant can be an individual who creates products like online courses or even companies and software like email marketing tools that offer affiliate programs like GetResponse, AWeber.
The Network/Affiliate Marketplace: Refers to central databases for different affiliate programs. They contain offers where the affiliates choose from and also take of the payments for affiliates and merchants for example Shareasale, CJ, Digistore24, and notably Clickbank.
Not forgetting the mighty Amazon affiliate program, the biggest marketplace worldwide, and one I would recommend because of the tons of products in different niches available.
Publisher/Affiliate: Refers to the party or player like you or me using affiliate program links to promote and make sales. Affiliates can earn from a few hundred bucks to a big chunk of dollars. I know of one affiliate who makes over 5 million dollars a year.
The Customer: It’s the consumer who buys an affiliate program through an affiliate link. Customers are very vital too because they complete this marketing cycle.
In this guide, I am not going to teach you how to become a merchant because this solely depends on your ideas to solve problems and available resources. However, I can outline for you the steps:
- You must have ideas about the products you want to create.
- Validate your idea in a way that it’s a problem solver, or improves existing products.
- Create your product.
- Look for a network or market place for affiliate marketing or attach an affiliate program to it. And there you are, a merchant.
How does Affiliate Marketing work?
In a nutshell, affiliate marketing involves a series of equally important steps i.e.
- Joining an affiliate network
- Pick up your product and you’ll be given your unique affiliate link. As well as identification number on the platform known as an affiliate ID.
- Promotion of your affiliate link through different ways like sharing the link on social media, blogging about the products, paid advertising. Etc.
- Get paid when a consumer clicks on your link and makes a purchase.
That’s how basic the cycle is. This, therefore leads to the following question. ….

Start a blog or a website to start reviewing products or basically write blogs about them
Blogging is the least cost-effective method of starting your affiliate marketing journey, in comparison to paid advertising and creating and kicking-off your YouTube channel.
It even becomes even fun making money blogging if you are such a blogging enthusiast.
All you have to do is start blog, and choose a profitable niche for your website or blog. Go on to select your affiliate product(s) to preview here.
Then create beautiful and valuable content surrounding your products, you can either do product reviews or comparison content.
Don’t forget to make sure that you fully optimize your website and content for search engines (SEO). This will force google algorism to rank you above your competitors hence more traffic and money in the backend.
2.The Paid Advertisement Approach
Before continuing, please note that I personally, don’t recommend paid advertising unless you have a way of making your money back. Or, if you have some cash into invest into it, proceed.
It’s the fastest way you can start earning but only if you do it rightfully.
I am pretty sure and approve you have come across ads on either social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) or Search Engines like Google, Bing, YouTube. Paid advertising is divided into groups mainly;
- Facebook ads
- Google ads
- YouTube ads.
Facebook Ads refer to the videos and posts with the word ‘sponsored” beneath the page name or individual account name you come across your Facebook newsfeeds. They contain links too, either before the post or after it.
Here, you have to create the Ads and link them to your website or landing pages.
A landing page is a unique product sales or demo page used for the purpose of increasing sales. This is where you briefly describe the product, collect their emails before the customers can perhaps complete a purchase.
When the customer clicks on your affiliate link, he or she is directed to the product where purchase and checkout are completed from.
It should be noted that Facebook Advertising Regulations forbid linking an ad directly to an affiliate program. If you do so, you’re penalized and may not earn your commission. This is where landing pages come in handy.
Nothing big about these ads. Only the outcome is really big, I mean the return on investment (ROI); money.
The major difference with Facebook ads is that Google ads are run on the biggest search engine; google.
All you have to do is create your Google AdWords account, connect it with the billing account. There, you’re good to go.
YouTube ads are no different from the rest of paid ads, only that they’re run on YouTube. But you first, need to have a YouTube channel which is legible for these ads.
There are also requirements from your YouTube channel to qualify;
- Firstly, your channel needs to have 1000+ subscribers
- Secondly, your channel must have a watch time of not less than 4000hours.
3.Create your YouTube channel
Over the past two decade, YouTube evolved into an import data source and it’s a no brainer that everyone is using it to expand their businesses. There are millions of businesses depending solely on this platform for traffic and leads.
YouTube could become one of your biggest assets if you started it today for affiliate marketing.
I know of a person, Mr. Franklin and John Crestani making thousands of dollars/mo. from using YouTube to review affiliate products. They both have over 250k subscribers apparently yet started humbly.
With this platform, all you need to do is thoroughly give the public value and persuade people to like the product. You should give an insight into the product, like the pros and cons of using, etc.
Then you post your affiliate link in the description box. You’ll probably make some sales here.
Furthermore, you can take it to the next level by connecting your affiliate link to your landing page or website. This is where you’ll collect their emails and happily make money in the backend of email marketing.
4. Scale and grow your business by incorporating email marketing.
Email marketing is a digital marketing channel of sending out commercial messages to consumers through emails.
This is really effective if you’ve built an email list. And an email list refers to a collection of emails you receive from your blog or website.
There are various ways to collect emails to build your email list like from your website’s organic traffic. This is effectively done using tools like Hello Bar which enables you to create a call to action on top of your website, or an opt-in page with a call to action.
The ‘call to action’ forms also known as lead magnets enhances email collection.
Or, use one of the most effective ways for email building, which is paid ads.
Here, you give out lead magnets or free offers like basic eBooks, pdfs in exchange for their emails on your landing pages.
After building your email list, you set an automated email cycle to do marketing in the backend.
You can first send several series of emails giving value content about your product.
Then, try to pitch sales in the last series.
